Electromagnetic Energy
Every day, we are continuously exposed to electromagnetic radiation (EM) from natural sources like the Earth's magnetic field, UV radiation, power lines, etc. This radiation is composed of electric and magnetic fields that vary over time, are oriented perpendicular to one another, and can propogate with no medium. EM radiation has a spectrum of frequencies that can ultimately be catagorized as ionizing and non-ionizing. Ionizing EM radiation will break molecular bonds and produce ions. This can inhibit cell division and is either not used clinically or is used in small doses. Non-ionizing EM radiation is safer and can be used in larger doses. Check out the links below to learn about some of the ways electromagnetic energy can be used clinically!
